Description:
Pick her up and RUN…
The 1st Wife Carrying Competition will be held June 23rd 2007 on Toronto’s Center Island, in conjuncture with the 3rd Annual Viking Boat Races & Festival. 9:00am – 5:00pm, check our website for scheduled details.
For the past 13 years, Bayside Rowing / Viking Boat Enterprise’s mandate is to make rowing available to public school youth, with a specific emphasis on underprivileged and inner-city kids, who could benefit most from all the sport has to offer, team work, self respect and perseverance.
This year we’ve decided to go the extra distance. Friday, is the start of the corporate-challenge fundraiser where, each adult corporate team, allows an inner-city school team to row for free. Saturday is charged with E.Z. Rocks’ Kidz Zone, TORVIK Viking re-enactments (TorVik.org), the hilarious Wife Carrying competition and much much more.
The idea of the Wife Carrying Competition, has deep roots in Finnish history. In the late 1800’s, it was proof of your fitness and health, and in spite of its humorous aspects, was also a common practice to steal women from the neighbouring villages.
The sport has exploded internationally and boasts strong competitors on the world scene from Finland, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, USA, Ireland, Sweden, and Great Britain. The length of the track, a variety of surfaces, dry obstacles, and one water obstacle about a meter deep, will be determined on site. The contest demands good physical condition, and a good sense of humour.
The wife to be carried may be your own, the neighbour’s or you may have just found her, but she must be over 17 years of age. It is important to note that on occassion, the Wife has carried the Husband. The minimum weight to be carried is 49 kilos.
Participation is free. We invite all fun loving families, Viking lovers, and sporty types to come on down for a day filled with laughter.
